Key Responsibilities:

External Engagement

  • Regularly communicate SAMS advocacy messages to Congressional offices, State Department, National Security Council, UN Missions, think tanks, and to other relief organizations
  • Oversee and administer the production of the organization’s advocacy materials, including policy papers, talking points, one-pagers, and blog posts
  • Spearhead advocacy-related events such as Congressional and UN briefings, meetings with government officials in NY, DC, and overseas, roundtables, and side-events

Policy Development

  • Lead efforts within the advocacy department staff and advocacy committee to coordinate and develop policies relating to SAMS humanitarian operations and the Syria crisis at the Congressional, USG, United Nations, and international levels
  • Collaborate with HQ senior staff and board to craft responses to crisis situations which may develop in the region
  • Produce monthly and quarterly reports on advocacy activities, and ensure that the current multi-year advocacy strategy is being followed or modified as needed 
  • Handle external inquiries regarding SAMS advocacy and policy positions from partners, policymakers, and media as necessary 

Partner Outreach

  • Represent SAMS in coalitions including but not limited to: Crisis Action, InterAction, American Relief Coalition for Syria, and Safeguarding Healthcare in Conflict 
  • Work with regional advocacy staff to ensure effective participation in regional coalitions in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq; and work to ensure that there is unified messaging from SAMS staff in those meetings 
  • Consistently connect with advocacy departments within other major partner and relief organizations, UN agencies, and others to coordinate a cohesive message
  • Present on behalf of SAMS in events as requested

Qualifications:

    • At least 5 years experience in advocacy, humanitarian emergencies, public policy, or international affairs
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters preferred
  • Experience drafting or overseeing the publication of research papers, talking points, or briefing memos required
  • Experience managing sensitive, high-level relationships is required
  • Knowledge of the US and EU political systems is desired
  • Familiarity with the Syrian conflict and refugee issues a plus
  • Arabic language skills a plus
