Washington, D.C. – We at SAMS are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic explosion yesterday in Beirut. With at least 100 people killed and another 4,000 injured, the toll of the explosion is staggering, and comes at a time when Lebanon is already facing economic and public health crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We extend our sincerest condolences to all those who lost loved ones, and stand in solidarity with the people of Beirut as they work to heal and rebuild in the aftermath of this tragic event. We also recognize the heroism of the health workers who are caring for victims of the explosion even as they continue to combat COVID-19.

In the coming days and weeks, our team in Lebanon will be working to provide support to those affected.
