Overview: The Senior External Communications Officer at the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) will play a key role in developing and implementing communication strategies that amplify SAMS’ mission, programs, and campaigns. The role focuses on content development and management, media outreach, social media management, and supporting strategic communication initiatives to engage a wide audience and promote SAMS’ humanitarian work in Syria, the Middle East, and beyond.

Responsibilities: 

  • Create, edit, and manage content for SAMS’ website, blog, newsletters, press releases, and social media platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director to plan and implement major communication campaigns, including Ramadan, end-of-year fundraising, and monthly program highlights.
  • Produce and coordinate multimedia content, including videos, graphics, reports, and storytelling that showcase SAMS’ impact and programs.
  • Manage and grow SAMS’ social media presence across platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) by crafting engaging, timely posts.
  • Work with internal teams to gather stories, photos, and data to support campaigns.
  • Support communication efforts for SAMS’ events, such as webinars, conferences, and fundraising events.
  • Develop promotional materials, manage event communications, and coordinate media coverage.
  • Provide day-to-day support to the Communications Director, including managing timelines, tracking deliverables, and preparing reports.
  • Organize digital assets, maintain media databases, and ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels.
  • Analyze social media metrics and adjust strategies to optimize reach and engagement.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a communications role, preferably within the nonprofit or humanitarian sector.
  • Strong writing, editing, and content creation skills.
  • Proven experience managing social media platforms and digital marketing tools.
  • Experience with graphic design, video production, or multimedia storytelling is an advantage.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Passion for humanitarian work and an understanding of the Syrian conflict and Middle East.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team, with a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Flexibility and creativity in problem-solving.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity to SAMS’ mission and values.
